What is In-Glaze reduction Luster?
The Luster process is complex and somewhat unpredictable. The
transformation of Silver to Gold has many variables including
temperature and atmosphere. The glaze contains Silver in the form
of Silver Nitrate -AgNO3 , or silver carbonate-Ag2CO3.
These earthenware pieces where fired in an electric kiln (oxidation
atmosphere) to the maturing point of the glaze around 1800*.
At a point during the cooling usually between 1450* and 1350*
combustible material is introduced, changing the oxidation atmosphere to
reduction. The strong open flames caused by the combustible material
causes the oxygen molecules to be consumed, leaving the pure metals on
the surface. Oxides such as cobalt, copper and manganese can give
further colors such as iridescent purples, blues and the very elusive
reds.
