Archaic Maiolica
The term maiolica is used to indicate the first ceramic ware produced in Italy. Normally produced with a coating of white glaze and originally decorated with only two colors, brown derived from manganese and green from copper. Later, blue derived from cobalt and other colors such as yellows and reds were derived from antimony, lead, and iron oxides.
The production of maiolica was widespread throughout north central Italy from about the middle of the 13th century to its heyday in the first half of the 15th century. Production continues in the provinces of Umbria and Tuscany as well as other regions of Italy.
